Invitation to Tender Overview

The contract provides for construction works to be undertaken under the Diggers Bridge Replacement Project, comprising of the construction of a reinforced concrete box culvert (RCBC) structure and corresponding roadway approaches.

Work shall be carried out in accordance with General Conditions of Contract (AS 4000), these specifications and drawings detailed herein.

Diggers Bridge is located in the Mowbray Valley to the Southwest of Port Douglas and west of the Captain Cook Highway. The subject crossing of the Mowbray River is a key link in the road network serving the valley. The area consists of sugar cane farming, rural residential properties and an operating quarry. Diggers Bridge current configuration is a timber bridge located on Mowbray River Road consisting of a one lane carriageway which has a 20-tonne load limit applied. Council has determined it will replace the bridge with a structure that serves the community, local farmers and the quarry. The existing bridge is to be retained and used as a cycleway.

The culvert crossing to be constructed consists of the following:

  • Reinforced raft slab

  • Six (6) 3600 x 2700mm Reinforced Concrete Box Sections (RCBC)

  • Fish baffles

  • Associated wing wall, debris deflectors and apron structures

  • Approach road formation

  • Concrete roadway over culverts

  • Select rock infill and scour protection

    The associated approaches consist of the following:

  • Embankment (Imported fill)

  • 8m sealed roadway (& Curve widening)

  • Unbound pavement
